Teammates Adam Hansen and Frantisek Rabon attempted to loosen the stuck helmet by hitting Martin in the head repeatedly with bidons full of water, but the helmet refused to budge. A disgruntled team mechanic was called in, who used a large wrench jammed forcefully under the edge of the helmet to try to remove it. By this point, Martin was dazed and becoming claustrophobic, screaming frantically, "Get it off me!" Finally, Bert Grabsch, fed up with the drama, quickly solved the problem by grabbing Martin and banging his head against the side of the team bus. The helmet promptly cracked in two. Grabsch was modest about his actions, stating that, "In this team, we are all expected to help our teammates. Plus I’ve been known to use a bit of hair gel myself." When contacted about the incident, Rolf Aldag was tight-lipped, saying only, "I must admit to using hair gel myself between 1997 and 2001.
