White Knight strikes again; McEwen takes overall honours
By Sharon Payne
A Grade Criterium
US Postal rider, Matt White secured his second win in as many months today, taking out the South Bank International Criterium in Brisbane. A breakaway with 25 year old Western Australian Road Champion, Jaaron Poad, proved beneficial for White who was too strong for Poad in the final straight. The win was not enough to secure the Overall Points Series, with Tour De France maillot vert, Robbie McEwen, taking out the honours.
Grid positions for the start were determined from straight line sprints held on Saturday afternoon. The strong field of fifty-five cyclists also included Brad McGee, stage winner of the Tour De France and Commonwealth Games gold medalist, Tour De France rider Baden Cooke, Allan Davis from ONCE and several U23 champions.
The first break came early in the race as White escaped with Poad and Brisbane's Leigh Palmer to put time and distance into the main pack. Robbie McEwen made several valiant attempts to bring back the break but failed until the final stages. The relentless pace of the leaders grew too much for Palmer and left White and Poad continue the race alone.
Almost immediately, a strong group of five emerged containing Robbie McEwen, Allan Davis, Ben Litchfield (one of Brisbane's strongest A Graders), Mark Rowland (who had placed second to McEwen in Surfers Paradise one week earlier) and Craig Cahill. Cycling superstars from the Tour, McGee and Cooke were not on the pace today, but managed to finish with the main bunch.
The main bunch was forced to sprint early according to criterium rules for 8th, 9th and 10th placings. White waited until the finishing straight to kick well clear of Poad, giving the crowd his victory salute as he crossed the line. Interest mounted to see who would take on McEwen in the sprint for third. Young Gold Coast rider, Craig Cahill upset the Tour de France sprinter for not cooperating during the chase and outsprinting him to the line. McEwen finished ahead of Davis followed by Litchfield and Rowlands seventh.
McEwen has had a heavy week of training already, clocking up nearly 800km this week after just a few weeks back in training. "Tomorrow I'll have an easy day," commented McEwen who still has many races in Australia before heading back to Belgium at the end of January.
Jaaron Poad was a surprise last minute entry after training 100km earlier in the day, deciding to enter just half an hour before race start. After four weeks off the bike and five days of training, Poad said he would have been happy just to finish.
"I thought the break might have been successful though," said Poad. "There're a lot of fit guys and a lot of unfit guys at this time of year, and it would have been hard to bring back a break in this heat." After moving to Queensland in July, Poad has been trying to turn professional. He is hoping that his second in the points series and his placing today may encourage a team like Giant Asia to have a second look at him.
Matt White said a change in attitude over the last couple of months has helped him. "I ride for the best team in the world and it's not usually my role to win races. You can get a bit complacent because you're in the number one team with the best rider but I've got a new attitude and I've got to do some stuff for myself as well." He will race another two races before heading overseas, and is hoping for a ride in the TdF in 2003.

| White and Jaaron Poad (NZ), who finished second, broke away, and a five man chase followed, including Cahill and McEwen, Leigh Palmer and Craig Mackie. However, according to McEwen, Cahill did not contribute to the chase group's effort and pipped McEwen at the line. McEwen called him on not contributing to the chase effort. For his part, Cahill said he was desperate for the prize money, and as a "nobody" was also trying to qualify for the upcoming Bay Criterium: "I did the wrong thing, I was with better riders than me, I'm struggling for money at the moment." |

Clarke edges out McEwen in exciting battle
By Rod Morris in Launceston
In cycling circles, Hilton Clarke jnr is known as the "Monster" and in the inaugural Doherty Hotels Launceston $20,000 Classic, he turned in a monster of a performance. Held on the second day of the Telstra Country Wide Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals Series, the 72 km criterium attracted one of the best ever fields assembled in an Australian one day race. Even Clarke would be the first to admit, he would not rate among the high profile riders in the event, but his end performance was first class.
Consider this blue riband field: Robbie McEwen, Stuart O'Grady, Baden Cooke, Brad McGee, Matthew Gilmore, Brett Aitken, Jame Carney, Cadel Evans, Danny Clark, Henk Vogels, Mark Renshaw, Stephen Wooldridge, Luke Roberts...and the list goes on. They were just some of the riders Clarke had to contend with.
The race tempo was a cracker, with laps of the 2.4 km street circuit averaging around 3.10 minutes. Riders showed they were fair dinkum from the very outset and the original starting field of 75 soon broke up. Victorian Nic Sanderson and Clarke were the early breakaways before Lee De Luca and Matt Hayman bridged the gap and formed a solid group of four. It wasn't long however before they were reeled in and the attacks started again.
This time Clarke - who was gaining sound support from his regular teammates David Tanner and controversial Victorian rider Robert Tighello - had help from big Tasmanian Karl Menzies and Hayman. The first of the intermediate sprints went to Tour de France star Robbie McEwen, but his early attack was also curtailed by a suspicious peloton.
As the race progressed, Wooldridge, Hayman, Tighello, Clarke and Menzies made the most of the lucrative intermediate lap prizes, including a special prime of $500 at 2-laps to go won by Hayman. A group of 12 breakaways had autographed their signature on the race, leaving the main bunch to fight out the minor placings.
In a desperate finish, Clarke held on to win from ace sprinter McEwen and O'Grady.
The first Tasmanian home was Sean Sullivan, who edged out the luckless Menzies, who was by far the biggest surprise packet of the front group.
With the race being privately funded by Launceston based sporting medico Dr Stan Seijka, co-sponsors, Doherty Hotels, were so impressed with the organisation of the event, the superb quality of the field and the response from the Tasmanian sporting public, that a commitment for the next two years was made before this race had even finished.

Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series - NE
Perth, Australia, January 2, 2002
Race 1 - January 2: Leederville (Oxford and Carr Streets), 7.30pm-8.30pm
Eastern States Cyclists Lead In Leederville
By Renae Woodhams
The first race of the Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series saw record crowds line the streets of Leederville to witness one of the most challenging circuits in the four-part world class cycling series.
New South Wales cyclist, Steve Williams, led home a strong field of 44 riders to win the W.J. Moncrieff Leederville Loop, ahead of Brett Aitken (SA) and Mark Renshaw (NSW) with local favourites Daniel Mackey, Jason Rigg and Nic Brown claiming minor placings.
The early stages of the race saw defending Sprint King Graham Brown break away strongly taking out the first Sprint Lap showing the form that won him the prestigious title in 2001. But Henk Vogels, who returned from the US to take part in the Series, did not let the Sprint King keep his crown and opened up a commanding 30 second lead which at its peak reached 240 metres.
Vogels maintained his impressive lead and with the support of the crowd spurring him on, for more than half an hour looked unbeatable. However, with 20 minutes remaining he was challenged by Williams, Mackey, Renshaw, Nic Brown Jason Rigg and, within a lap, was swallowed back into the chaser group. Cat and mouse tactics saw the lead change every few metres in the final laps of the race before Williams made his move.
A crash on the northern corner of the course saw defending Overall Champion Hilton Clarke Jr fall, eliminating his chances of retaining the coveted yellow jersey.
With just five laps to go and in a clever tactical display, Williams - who for most of the race rode unnoticed in the back of the pack - broke away strongly to open up an unbeatable 20 metre lead, despite valiant sprints by Aitken, Renshaw and Mackey in the final stages.
"This is one of the toughest courses in the Series," Williams said. "It's a fast paced course with tight corners and I knew I had to be the first to break in the final laps if I was to be a serious contender. I'm looking forward to maintaining form tomorrow night."
The first race of the Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series saw just 18 riders finish from a starting field of 44, demonstrating the complexity of the course and the intensity of the Series.
The Siena's Caffe Peter Watson Mile, which ran ahead of the cycling event, saw the 2001 Australian 1500m champion, Clint Mackavicious (NSW), take out the race with Alistair Stevenson (QLD) second and Anthony Parish (QLD) third.
The Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series continues tomorrow night in Victoria Park from 7.30pm with Henk Vogels Jr riding in the Sprint King green jersey and Steve Williams wearing the Overall Champion yellow jersey.
The Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series is a "Best on Earth in Perth" event. For more information on riders, races and courses please visit

Race 2 - January 3: Victoria Park (Albany Highway), 7.30pm-8.30pm
NSW Champion Mark Renshaw tonight went two better in the second race of the Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series while the field of local and international talent stepped up the pace for what was to be a thrilling finish to the Victoria Park Classic.
In the final lap Renshaw led the sprint to power home ahead of Graeme Brown and Olympic Champion Brett Aitken. The sprint finish followed a commanding race by three riders who set the pace early and managed to hold the peloton for the majority of the race.
The three-man break came in the form of 2001 Perth Criterium Champion Hilton Clarke, with local riders Daniel Mackey and Ryan Suckling powering ahead of the field, maintaining a 12 second lead which lasted for more than 20 minutes ahead of Nic Brown, Graeme Brown and Henk Vogels, who led the chasing bunch.
The lead in the chasers changed with every lap but a consolidated effort by Graeme Brown and Hilton McMurdo saw solo breaks try to catch the three leaders. This stretched the field out over the circuit, but the race was characterised by determined attacks with riders mindful of the close points situation ahead of tomorrow night's final in the 2003 Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series.
In the final stages of the race, Mackey, Suckling and Clarke all fought hard to maintain their position but with the pace increasing and riders all vying for the points, they were swallowed back into the bunch in the final turns of the circuit.
With three laps to go, last night's winner Steve Williams led the chase to the breakaway three, but the lead again changed with Jason Rigg, Andrew Sime and Phil Reimann picking up the pace to chase the champ.
As the final laps unfolded, small attacks occurred, first by local rider Nic Brown who was followed by Daniel Mackey. However Henk Vogels led the bunch and progressively closed the attacks, inciting the final sprint where Renshaw gained the upper hand on the corner and Graeme Brown and Brett Aitken were unable to overpower him.
"It was a hard race with a lot of riders consistently attacking," Mark Renshaw said. "The pace was much faster and I was lucky to break through when I did."
The Be Active Cycle Instead Criterium Series continues tomorrow in Subiaco from 7.30pm with Graeme Brown riding in the Sprint King green jersey and Mark Renshaw wearing the Overall Champion yellow jersey.

Race 3 - January 4: Subiaco (Hay Street), 7.30pm-8.30pm
Perth series dominated by NSW talent
By Renae Woodhams
NSW champion, Mark Renshaw has won the final of the Be Active Cycle Instead Perth Criterium Series held in Subiaco tonight, leading a thrilling sprint finish ahead of Olympic Gold medallist, Brett Aitken and local rider Daniel Mackey.
This follows Renshaw's victory in the second race of the Series and cements his standing as one of the best up and coming riders in Australia.
As anticipated the final circuit lived up to its expectations with the tight corners and narrow course proving difficult for many riders. As a result, a third of the field finished and the race was characterised by a number of early crashes.
The riders who were not forced to retire from the course following the crashes, were stretched over the entire circuit until an aggressive break by Steve Williams dragged four riders with him leaving the chasers to regroup.
Renshaw, Mackey, and Graham Brown followed Williams' lead and were soon joined by Aitken with the five man group setting an impressive 11 second lead over the main peleton. The group set the pace for a further 10 minutes with the lead changing regularly.
A decisive break came with 20 minutes to go as World Champion, Peter Dawson, showed his pursuit skills by jumping from the main bunch and catching the leaders. It took him fifteen minutes to bridge the gap and join the five man lead where he maintained his position within the group.
In the last few minutes the main peleton completed their race and left the circuit leaving the leading six riders to battle it out. On the final turn, Renshaw out-sprinted Brown and Aitken, but an appeal saw Brown bumped to fifth place opening third position for local rider Mackey. Dawson finished strongly for fourth place followed by Williams in sixth.
Renshaw's win in the Be Active Cycle Instead Perth Criterium Series caps off an impressive year, which saw him smash the Commonwealth Games World Record in team pursuits and win the World Championships in Holland.
"This has been a fantastic series and I was hoping to win this final," Renshaw said.
Following the series final of the Be Active Cycle Instead Perth Criterium Series, the overall green jersey winner is Graham Brown and the West Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS), featuring Daniel Mackey, Peter Dawson, Ric Steele and Benjamin Miles, took out the team prize.
The Australian Criterium Championships will be held in Grand Boulevard, Joondalup tomorrow from 7.30pm with pre race entertainment featuring the Perth Jazz Orchestra and Mark Underwood from 5pm.
